Big fights in the penultimate round

In the 8th round of the GRENKE Chess Open the players fought to get themselves in the best possible tournament position before the last round. Only board 1 saw a quick draw between Falko Bindrich (Germany) and Richard Rapport (Hungary), but on the remaining top boards fighting chess was on display everywhere. Anton Korobov (Ukraine) prevailed against Hagen Poetsch (Germany), Alexei Shirov (Latvia) scored a big black win against Jules Moussard (France) and, to the delight of locals and organisers alike, Vincent Keymer continued his great run in Karlsruhe with a win over Gabor Papp (Hungary). Thanks to their wins Korobov, Shirov and Keymer enter the last round in the lead with 7/8 and will fight for tournament victory on the stage, side by side with Magnus Carlsen and Co.

Eleven players leading the GRENKE Open

At the GRENKE Chess Open, none of the players was able to take a decisive lead. After seven rounds and with the last day coming up, eleven players are in front with 6/7. There is a huge group of 33 players chasing the leaders. Many of them can still hope for a big part of the prize fund or even the tournament victory. One of the leaders is Germany’s top talent Vincent Keymer, who won his game against GM Rainer Buhmann. Best female is Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi (India) who is cruising towards the prize for the best female player. Ivan Farago (Hungary) is the best senior so far and Schachfreunde Deizisau holds the best team classification after seven rounds.

Two players in the lead after 6 rounds

The games on the top three boards ended in rather quick draws as the grandmasters are trying to save energy for the crucial final rounds. Out of the big group of 23 players who came into this round on 4.5/5 only two could win their games in the end: Anton Korobov from Ukraine and Maxime Lagarde from France. These two players will therefore be battling it out on the top board in round 7. Meanwhile Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi (India) and Anastasia Savina (Russia) lead the race for the woman's prize, with a score of 4.5/6. Vincent Keymer also continues giving German fans a lot to cheer for/be happy about as he beat IM Alessio Valsecchi and still has good norm chances, with a current score of 5 points.
